“The ‘Medieval’ Undone: Imagining a New Global Past,” a special issue of boundary 2
Medieval studies is undergoing a disciplinary crisis: its scholars are attempting to reformulate the field’s Eurocentric structures and methods and to approach premodernity through a global perspective. Contributors to this special issue reflect on the concept of the “medieval” and what it accomplishes or impedes as a category for knowledge production. The articles showcase the debates surrounding the bounds of medieval studies and its tenuous future as a field traditionally dedicated to an isolated, European past cordoned off from the ideological projects of modernity. The articles also examine the various ways that globalizing the Middle Ages and reading premodernity through modern critical theories both undoes the “medieval” and invites closer consideration of its continued relevance.

Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies 54:1
“Physiognomy and Visual Judgment in Medieval and Early Modern Europe,” a special issue of the Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies
From the late Middle Ages through the eighteenth century, the science of physiognomy played a central role in the intellectual life of what we might call “the long Renaissance.” Indeed, it did much to shape both the portrayal and the understanding of personality in the visual and literary arts of the period. But nowhere was its influence greater than in the practice of criminal law. This special issue explores the varied ways that jurists and judges drew on theories—ancient and modern—of how to read the human body, the face especially, in order to help determine whether or not a suspect was guilty or innocent. The articles offer insights into the various ways in which Renaissance thinkers not only drew on ancient and medieval sources for their understanding of human psychology but also continued to elaborate new theories in order to develop what they viewed as a more scientific jurisprudence.

Romanic Review 114:3
“French and Francophone Studies: What Should We Be Doing?,” a special issue of Romanic Review
“In reviewing the material evidence—department websites, conference programs, course listings, tables of contents of peer-reviewed journals—of what we’ve been doing lately in the United States in French and Francophone studies, one is left with an impression of dispersal, of uncertainty about our mutual aspirations,” writes the editor of this special issue in their introduction. “The only coherence I can locate in this diffuse field is a general sense of crisis and a seeping in of political debates that are omnipresent in contemporary American culture more generally (for example, various identity-based reclamations such as canon expansion) but that are not unique to our discipline. Some other field-specific set of guiding principles is not immediately visible.” In response to this observed dilemma, the editor asked colleagues in the French and Francophone studies field, “Without such principles, how should we think about the task before us? What should we be doing?” This special issue is a compilation of their responses.

Manuscript Studies
Manuscript Studies embraces the full complexity of global manuscript studies in the digital age. It has been conceived with four main goals in mind. First, to bridge the gaps between material and digital manuscript research; second, to break down the walls which often separate print and digital publication and serve as barriers between academics, professionals in the cultural heritage field, and citizen scholars; third, to serve as a forum for scholarship encompassing many pre-modern manuscript cultures—not just those of Europe; and finally to showcase methods and techniques of analysis in manuscript studies that can be applied across different subject areas.
