JOurnals FRom DUke University Press

Duke University Press journals are a vital part of scholarly discourse in humanities and social sciences. Their titles—some with broad, interdisciplinary focus, others which investigate the depths of a particular area of study—continue to define and redefine the terms of scholarly discussion.

Ethnohistory 70:2

“Law, Politics, and Indigeneity in the Making of Ethnohistory in the Twenty-First Century: Perspectives from Latin America, Africa, and the Pacific,” a special issue of Ethnohistory.

Contributors to this special issue “seek to open up a conversation about the diverse and changing contexts for ethnohistorical work in places where complex and fraught relationships between activism, law, state authority, anthropology, and history continue to shape the methods and approaches of ethnohistory,” write the editors in the introduction. Authors discuss decolonizing the discourse of human rights from an African-centric perspective; helping the Cañamomo-Lomaprietas—an Indigenous community in the Colombian Andes—document their legal claims to land; engaging present-day communities in Oaxaca, Mexico in local and national politics; examining the formation of a bicultural state in Aotearoa New Zealand; and more.

Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East

This journal seeks to bring region and area studies into conversation with a rethinking of theory and the disciplines. Its aim is twofold: to ask how area and region are implicated in the production of geohistorical universals and, conversely, to attend to the specificity of non-Western social, political, and intellectual formations as these challenge normative assumptions of social life, cultural practice, and historical transformation. CSSAAME is committed to working across temporal divides and asking how concepts and practices might be rethought and redeployed through new narratives of connection and comparison.

Journal of Contemporary African Art

This journal focuses on publishing critical work that examines contemporary African and African Diaspora art within the modernist and postmodernist experience and therefore contributes significantly to the intellectual dialogue on world art and the discourse on internationalism and multiculturalism in the arts. Nka mainly includes scholarly articles, reviews (exhibits and books), interviews, and roundtable discussions.
