Small and midsized cities played a key role in the Industrial Revolution in the United States as hubs for the shipping, warehousing, and distribution of manufactured products. Susan M. Wachter is Richard B. Worley Professor of Financial Management and Professor of Real Estate and Finance at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Professor of City and Regional Planning at PennDesign. She codirects the Penn Institute for Urban Research and is coeditor of numerous books, including Neighborhood and Life Chances, Growing Greener Cities, and The American Mortgage System, also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press. Kimberly A. Zeuli is Senior Vice President and Director of Research and Advisory Services for the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City. She has held faculty positions at the University of Kentucky and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was formerly Vice President of Community Development for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.
