Combined Academic Publishers (CAP) was founded in 1997 and offers distribution, sales and marketing services for both print and digital products to a group of internationally respected American University Presses in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific (EMEA/APAC). Based in the UK, CAP provides a fully collaborative service which aims to complement and extend the work of our client Presses. Our sales team seeks to maximise sales through all available channels by working collaboratively with our vendor partners across EMEA and APAC. Key account management is a focus of our activity and we work together closely with the online vendors and wholesalers to ensure that data and supply channels are functioning smoothly and that our clients’ publications are well represented. We also work closely with the independent retailers doing both front list selling and backlist stock checks to ensure that the independents are promoting the right titles. Campus and university libraries are also a core area of our focus and our team works with library suppliers, libraries and academics to ensure that our clients’ publications get the maximum attention via reading lists, approval plans and subject librarian buying. For digital products, we offer a fully integrated sales & marketing service; growing direct platform sales, selling e-books directly to universities and consumers, or driving e-book sales through both consumer and library e-vendors. Our dynamic and multi-lingual sales team finds creative solutions to sales channel challenges, responding quickly to guarantee maximal sales in this rapidly shifting arena.

Through detailed attention to individual titles and authors our experienced marketing team aims to cultivate the niches and networks in which our clients’ publications will thrive. We recognise the importance of authors in the promotion of their work and place them at the centre of our marketing activity, ensuring that their title receives maximum exposure regardless of where they may be based. With this in mind, we attend a large number of academic conferences each year, carefully curating appropriate title selections to ensure that our presses' lists are well represented. Biannually we create subject catalogues to combine the best of our presses’ latest titles and these are used by our sales team and mailed to our extensive journal reviewer and academic librarian database. The marketing team is also active on social media working with our clients to maximise their author’s publicity and we have a multi-faceted blog, which we use to promote the power of our presses’ books. Using our in-house media database the marketing team also prepare lists for new season titles targeting both specialist academic journals and mainstream media. It’s a fully comprehensive marketing service and we feel that we get the very best out of each title we represent.

Using custom built algorithms we maintain appropriate stocking levels at our distribution warehouse and work closely with our press partners to ensure that inventory is well managed. We have assisted our presses’ as they transfer much of their list to POD ordering; this helps avoid over-stocking, minimises our carbon footprint, and saves on freight costs. We have secured highly competitive rates with both Marston and Lightning Source UK for POD services; clients signing with us receive these preferential rates.
CAP understands the value of precise data and its importance in discoverability and sell through. That’s why we dedicate a great deal of time ensuring that the bibliographic data we receive is edited and improved for our markets. From a simple P&A feed, to an Onix 3.0 file to Nielsen, we make certain that the industry gets the information needed.
